Around The Globe
CHINA
Pui Wa Floral Design School invited world renowned Dutch Designer,
Mr. Henk Mulder to Beijing for a Demonstration and Workshop. Damien Koh,
AIFD, WFC Member, was the sommentator and translator for the program held
at the Lai Tai Flower & Plant Market.
INDONESIA
Els Tiwar of Jakarta held a Floral Demonstration and Workshop for the
florists in Indonesia. "Participation
was good and encouraging," reported WFC Member Bernard Low of Singapore.
Anson Low, AIFD of Singapore was invited by Els to be the guest designer
for the Christmas design event.
JAPAN
June Shishikura announced that the 1st WFC Japan Floral Demonstration
will be held May 30, 2004 in Tokyo. New WFC Member, Mr. Jinbo, AIFD and
June are working continuously to organize and present a fabulous event
for the revived WFC Japan Chapter. More information on the program will
be forthcoming.
THE NETHERLANDS
Els Hazenberg welcomed exchange student Helen O'Connor, Daughter of WFC
South African Member Isobel O'Connor. Helen is exchanging with a shop
owner in the Netherlands.
Els and George Hazenberg will travel to Pasadena, California, USA for
the Tournament of Roses Parade during December and January. WFC wishes
George and Els another successful year decorating the Parade Executives
floats and cars.
THE PHILIPPINES
Efren and Nikki Chatto, along with Efren's mother Victoria, visited the
Horticultural Flower Show in Aalsmeer, The Netherlands in November. The
trio was able to meet and visit with WFC Members George and Els Hazenberg
while there.
SINGAPORE
The most grand flower event of Singapore was held November 14-23, 2003
at the Singapore Art Centre. "Singapore Blooms: was the biggest showcase
of flower designers in Singapore. WFC Members Anson and Bernard Low participated
in the event, which was organized by the Tourism Board of Singapore to
"Blom" the floral and tourism industry in Singapore. Anson was
one of the five guest designers at the show.
U.S.A
We are happy to report that WFC Chairman Emeritus, Herman Meinders is
recovering well in Oklahoma from his accident. He thanks everyone for
their good wishes for a speedy recovery he received while recuperating.
Home Office regrets to announce
the passing of Mrs. Jo Butler, wife of our WFC Board Member and Teleflora
Chairman, Mr. Tom Butler. Jo graduated to be with the Lord on October
5, 2003. We send our warm regards to Tom during these trying times.
Long time floral associate and friend of WFC, Mr. Don Stothart, AIFD,
passed away November 15, 2003. He was a retired florist and was the President
of the Louisiana Florist designers Scholarship Fund. Don was also the
recipient of the Distinguished Service Award "Fellows" of the
American Institute of Floral Designers in 1984. Contributions can be sent
to the Don Stothart AIFD Scholarship Foundation at 601-332-1697.
WFC Member, Alisa de Jon Stout and Hannah Sigur presented, "The Art
of Floral Design," to a wide-ranging audience of academics as well
as members of The Dutch Studies Program of the University of California,
Berkley, and The Netherlands America University League of California on
Sunday, October w6, 2003 at The University of California, Berkley. Referring
to their critically acclaimed book, A Master Guide to the Art of Floral
Design (Timber Press, 2002), the well-received program emphasized the
flower itself as the ultimate model, and therefore master teacher, not
only for the art of floral design, but also in any scientific and all
art endeavors. The program began with a short slide lecture, followed
by an exhibition of several large compositions and hands-on demonstrations
of designs ranging from classic to contemporary.
